Every product has a shelf life, but sadly that is not the case with plastics. Plastics take around 500 to 1000 years to completely degrade due to the presence of complex polymers. As a result, presently whatever fraction of plastic has ever been manufactured or used by us, can be found in some form or the other on the planet.
Currently, India generates around 56 lakh tonnes of plastic waste annually, where Delhi alone accounts for 9,600 metric tonnes per day. Plastic menace is also one of the major causes that are making waste management a colossal task for the country.
It is very important to sensitize young minds about this ever-increasing problem. Working in this direction, we organized a program in a village school in 2014 and inspired young people to use the three Rs- reuse, recycle and reduce. We promoted different ways to do so.
In this manner, the women at our Skill Centre in Sakipur provided inspiration as they made bags, file and notebook cover from old sarees and clothes.
